South Ossetia: Respect for Georgia’s Sovereignty Is Essential to European Security

The Russian Federation has intensified its efforts towards the de facto annexation of South Ossetia. Such annexation constitutes a blatant and unacceptable violation of international law and of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It forms part of Moscow’s broader efforts to assert control over territories of neighbouring states, including Donbas and Crimea in Ukraine, Transnistria in Moldova, and Abkhazia in Georgia.
Lasting stability and security in the Caucasus and across Europe can only be achieved through full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every state.
